EFL Merit League One - Newport U18s 3 Argyle 0
27th February 2017
THIS was a disappointing performance by the Argyle youngsters in their opening EFL Merit League One fixture at Lliswerry High School, Newport.
"We conceded two early goals in difficult conditions, which were the same for both sides," said Argyle Academy manager Kevin Hodges. "We didn't defend well but still had numerous chances to score and we really need to to better in both penalty areas."
Argyle had two trialists playing - defender Ben Scorey from Bournemouth and midfielder Josh Stack from Derby - and both were substituted on the hour.
Newport were quicker to adapt to the conditions as bad defending allowed them to score in the 10th and 18th minutes.
Argyle came back but failed to convert any of the several chances they created and were hit again, on 62 minutes, when they failed to defend a set play.
Argyle: Michael Cooper, Ben Scorey (Harry Hodges 60), Jordan Bentley, Callum Rose, Ryan Law, Josh Richards, Cameron Sangster (Matt Ward 80), Josh Stack (Luke Jephcott 60), Billy Craske, Alex Fletcher, Alex Battle.
