ARGYLE came through a tough week unbeaten and on course for promotion after a Graham Carey special powered them to a 1-0 home Sky Bet League Two victory over Morecambe.
Graham struck in the first half to frank form that had seen the Pilgrims win away at Mansfield and draw at Wycombe in the previous seven days; earn them seven points out of nine; and keep them firmly on course for promotion.
It left them six points behind leaders Doncaster – who they play next Sunday – seven points ahead of third-placed Portsmouth and 11 in front of the play-off zone, much to the delight of Pilgrims’ midfielder David Fox.
“If we keep that sort of form up for the next few weeks, we will be where we want to be,” said David. “If you’d have given us that many points before the week started, we’d have taken it – Carlisle lost at Mansfield today and it’s a tough place to go; Wycombe are just outside the play-offs.
“We can be pleased with our week. We’ve had a real hectic period and we’ve stretched the gap, which is good and now we’ll get a week’s recovery and rest, ready for a big game next week.”
The demands on the Pilgrims have seen them dig deep into their squad, illustrated by substitute Nathan Blissett opening his account in the 1-1 draw with Wycombe in midweek.
“It’s been basically game-recovery-game-recovery and we’ve needed everyone,” said Foxy. “I thought the subs were very good today when they came on, just like Bliss was on Tuesday night, and we are going to need everyone until the end of the season because a lot of lads have played a lot of games.”
The strength of the squad was illustrated by the fact that four first-team players – Nauris Bulvitis, Arnie Garita, Connor Smith and Craig Tanner, were given a run-out in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League side’s 6-0 victory at St Blazey.
“The game, for those lads, will be great,” said David. “They will get their 90 minutes, or however many minutes, today and then they’ll be in, fighting to get a place next Sunday.
“Everyone has had a game; everyone will be fresh and ready to start again on Tuesday because we have got a week of preparation leading into a big game now, and we are going to need everybody.
“People are putting hands up, wanting to play, and it’s good for everyone.”
