Match report for Helston Athletic vs Plymouth Argyle on 14 Jul 18

ARGYLE victory over Tavistock was not the only success that the Pilgrims had in their pre-season friendlies on Saturday afternoon.

As well as the 5-1 win at Langsford Park, a slightly younger Argyle team also beat Helston Athletic 5-0 with two goals from Luke Jephcott and a goal each for Cameron Sangster, Klaidi Lolos and Dan Rooney.

The first goal of the match came from Jephcott, only eight minutes into the first half, where he easily slipped the ball past Helston ‘keeper, Barrie Wyatt.

Only two minutes later the Pilgrims had another chance, again from Jephcott, but the ball was struck wide from Wyatt’s hand and resulted in a corner- from which Ryan Law’s shot was saved.

Despite a very strong performance and continuous chances for Argyle, the first half ended 1-0.

A brilliant save from newly-signed professional, Michael Cooper, stopped Helston equalising in the eighth minute of the second half.

Argyle’s lead was then doubled as Sangster played the ball well down the right-hand side and shot into an unmanned net in the 58th minute.

Within the space of five minutes Rooney was able to beat an offside trap thrown at him, volleyed the ball towards the net - just missing it but also missing Wyatt’s dive - meaning that Jephcott was able to get on the end of it and slot it in the back of the net.

Lolos was the scorer of the fourth goal of the match, 73 minutes in, which was assisted, again, by Rooney as it was slipped into the bottom corner.

The final goal of the match came well-deserved for Rooney in the 79th minute, after assisting for the previous two goals.

Robbie Herrera took control of the younger Pilgrims in their match, and he was pleased with the outcome.

“The game started quite slow but we got on top,” Robbie said, “We passed quite well.

“There were a mix of both second-years as well as scholarship players.

“It was a very good workout for the players.”

An all-round successful day for two Argyle teams.
