Argyle Youth 0 Newport County 0

A WELCOME clean sheet for the Pilgrims in a return to action in the EFL Youth Alliance and a game that could have gone either way.

A special occasion for Tyler Coombes, promoted from the education programme with Argyle Community Trust, who enjoyed a fine game in goal.

The first chance fell to Sam Wickens, who went close with his shot, and then a delicious cross from Rhys Fuller just needed a final touch on 25 minutes. Tom Purrington came into the action with two decent long-range efforts.

Argyle’s best opening of the first period fell to Ollie Tomlinson, following a fine set-piece delivery. The ball ricocheted to Tomlinson, who caught his volley well but straight down the throat of the Newport goalkeeper.

The visitors conjured up their best attempt after the break but substitute Alfie Wotton was perfectly positioned to clear off the line. Argyle’s last chance came five minutes from end after Rio Garside weaved his way into space but the final shot went just over.
