Danny Mayor On Coming to Home park
THERE was a whole lot of love for new signing Danny Mayor after his signing was announced on Monday, from the Green Army and, not least of all, from manager Ryan Lowe.
Such is Ryan’s belief in the midfielder’s ability that he snapped him up from former club Bury, where he was involved in around a third of the Shakers’ goals last term.
The appreciation is mutual. Soon after joining the Pilgrims, midfielder Danny was quick to place on record his admiration for the man who brought him to the Theatre of Greens and for the tutelage provided by him and his backroom team.
“There’s no doubt that he got the best out of me last season,” said 28-year-old Danny. “Last season, I personally think was my best to date. I have no doubt that, performance-wise, it was down to him and the staff.”
The relationship between player and manager has blossomed over five years together at Gigg Lane, on and off the field, and the new man says the Ryan will give him the confidence needed to fire on all cylinders in the Westcountry
“He just wanted to look after me and I think that’s the reason why performances were so high last season,” said Danny.
“It is exciting, because I had an injury a couple of years ago, which kept me out for a year. I think you sometimes question if you’ll get back to the level that you thought you could get to, but he was always honest with me; if I needed a down day or anything like that, he was brilliant with me.”
Another show of love from Ryan toward his latest acquisition is the small matter of Danny's assigned squad number for the upcoming Sky Bet League Two campaign.
It may just be a number on a shirt, but often in football numbers carry a certain weight of expectation – like Danny’s No.10 shirt, for example.
“I think people maybe expect No.10s to do something on the park, so I’m hoping I don’t disappoint,” said the playmaker who previously wore the same number at Bury.
“I’m not too bothered about numbers, if I’m being honest – it’s just a number to me – but it was lovely that [the manager] thought of that.
“To wear it at Argyle, I’m really looking forward to it.”
