WITH just over a week to go before the beginning of the new Sky Bet League Two season, Argyle manager Ryan Lowe has boosted his squad with the signing of Jose Baxter.
The latest Pilgrim was unveiled to the Green Army in Thursday’s open training session at Home Park. The 27-year-old forward arrives in PL2 on a short-term deal after spending last season in League Two with Oldham, where he has enjoyed two spells.
Jose sprung to prominence on the opening day of the 2008-09 Premier League season, when he became Everton’s youngest senior player at the tender age of 16.
Following a loan at Tranmere Rovers, his first move to Oldham came in 2012 – joining on the same day as former Pilgrim Matt Derbyshire – and he then joined Sheffield United for three seasons.
His 121-game spell at Bramall Lane saw him score 28 goals – including a penalty double in United’s 2014 3-0 FA Cup second-round win against Argyle – and assisted another 12, but was eventually adversely affected by personal problems that saw him take an enforced break from the game at the end of the 2015-16 season.
A successful period of rehabilitation followed, including a year back at Everton where he played alongside Pilgrims’ Calum Dyson and Conor Grant, before his return, last season, to Oldham.
Welcome to Home Park, Jose.
