Greatest Pilgrim Goalkeepers
Jim Furnell
Ranked No. 3

In the last poll of this nature, conducted in 2007, Jim Furnell was voted your greatest Argyle goalkeeper and he clearly remains as one of the most respected custodians in our history.

Starting his career at Burnley, Furnell was signed by Liverpool and helped the Anfield giants win promotion back to the top flight before switching to Arsenal in 1963.

Over the next five years, he was first choice for the Gunners and played in the 1968 League Cup Final. Furnell’s next stop was at Rotherham before his love affair with Argyle began in 1970.

Aged 33 when he arrived, Furnell was the dominant force at Home Park over the next six years. He won Player of the Season in his first campaign as a Pilgrim and displayed the talent and experience that comes from playing at two massive clubs.

He retained the agility and reflexes of a youngster, despite being in the twilight of his career, but it was the faultless handling that made Jim Furnell such a great goalkeeper. An absolute legend who racked up 207 appearances for Argyle before moving into coaching in 1976.

Jim Furnell is number three in your list of the greatest ever Argyle goalkeepers.
