The Joe Story

JOE Edwards will be looking to repeat the success of his last spell in the Westcountry and make 2019-20 a promotion-winning season.

Joe, 28, who has joined the Pilgrims after three years with Walsall, was part of the Yeovil Town side that reached the Championship after beating Brentford in the 2012-13 League One play-off final.

That Wembley triumph came in the middle of a successful third spell with the Glovers following two previous loans from boyhood club Bristol City. After starting out the next Championship season at right-back, he made 50 appearances, mostly in midfield.

Despite his Player-of-the-Season efforts, Yeovil were relegated back to League One, whereupon Joe succeeded to the Glovers’ captaincy and took his total appearances for the Huish club to 132 before leaving for a season at League One Colchester United.

He moved to Walsall in the summer of 2016 on a two-year deal that was extended by a further year in the summer of 2018 while he was still recovering from a knee ligament injury that curtailed his appearances in the latter half of 2017-18 and opening half of last season.

One of his first games back in the saddle came in January this year when he captained Walsall at Home Park in a game the Pilgrims won 2-1 with goals from his namesake, Ryan, and fellow centre-back Niall Canavan.

He also played in both matches between Argyle and Walsall in the 2017-18 season, a 2-1 victory for Walsall at the Banks’s Stadium on the opening day of the campaign and a 1-0 defeat for the Saddlers in a match settled by his former Bristol City team-mate Ryan Taylor’s goal.

Gloucester-born Joe began his professional career as a full-back with Bristol City in 2009, when current Torquay United manager Gary Johnson was in charge, and was given his full debut by Keith Millen two years later.

He later linked up with Johnson at Yeovil where, for the first time, he was deployed as a midfielder, and where he had two loans before signing permanently in January 2013.
