The Grimsby Campaign

ARGYLE welcome Grimsby Town to Home Park on Saturday afternoon and it has already been something of a rollercoaster season in Sky Bet League Two for the Mariners.

Grimsby have 19 points from 15 games, picking up 11 of those points in August alone. On the opening day, they won 2-0 at Morecambe and ended the month with a fine three-game run, drawing 2-2 with Colchester before beating Port Vale 5-2 then Walsall 3-1 the following week.

Town are currently 18th in Sky Bet League Two. In October, they only managed one point which came courtesy of a 0-0 draw at the Abbey Stadium against Cambridge United. The Mariners recently suffered their heaviest defeat of their campaign against Leyton Orient, a 4-0 loss at Brisbane Road.

Their last win stopped Exeter City in their tracks, the Grecians were on course for a club record number of victories but went down to a 3-1 defeat, giving Grimsby happy memories of a trip to Devon.

They did progress past Doncaster Rovers 1-0 in the Carabao Cup, then Macclesfield via a penalty shoot-out win before being beaten by a rampant Chelsea in the Third Round.

In the Leasing.com Trophy, the Mariners lost all of their group stage games, firstly, against Scunthorpe. They then ran Sunderland close but went down 3-2 in the end. Matt Green had Town in front but Will Grigg and Marc Mcnulty dug the Black Cats out of a hole and netted the winning goal with just four minutes to play.

Grimsby’s latest game also came in the Trophy and a 2-1 loss at home to Leicester City Under-21s, although they were very unlucky to concede a last-minute winner.
