Argyle and Chestnut Appeal to offer free PSA testing at Huddersfield game

Kevin Nancekivell

Argyle is once again partnering with The Chestnut Appeal for Men’s Health to offer free, lifesaving prostate cancer tests to men over 45 years old across the community.

This year’s clinic will take place on Saturday, 21 March at Plymouth’s Life Centre, ahead of the Greens’ home fixture against Huddersfield Town.

Testing will be available from 11am to 2pm, and those attending the match can head straight to the stadium after their test has taken place.

Due to the incredible demand we have seen for the service since it began in 2022, pre-registration is essential and unfortunately walk-ins cannot be accommodated due to clinical requirements.

Argyle and The Chestnut Appeal are once again joining forces to help men access vital PSA blood tests - an initiative that has already had a profound impact.

Over the past four years, over 1,200 men have been tested, including key members of staff such as first team coach Kevin Nancekivell. In total, 50 men were flagged as potentially having prostate cancer in its early, symptomless stages, giving them the best possible chance of successful treatment.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Every year in the UK, more than 52,000 men are diagnosed, and 12,000 lose their lives. The PSA test, which measures levels of prostate-specific antigen in the blood, remains one of the key tools in identifying early warning signs.

The initiative continues to honour the late Dr Salvo Natale, Argyle fan and founder of The Chestnut Appeal, whose tireless work helped countless men facing prostate cancer. The club is proud to continue his legacy, ensuring that awareness and access to testing remains a priority.

The event also forms part of Argyle’s wider commitment during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men, but the risk is even greater for those from Black or mixed heritage backgrounds, affecting 1 in 4. Increasing awareness, particularly among higher risk groups, is a vital part of the club’s mission to support the health and wellbeing of its community.

Lesley-Ann Simpson, Chief Executive Officer at The Chestnut Appeal, said: “We’re pleased to once again be teaming up with Plymouth Argyle to offer men this lifesaving test. Last year over 300 men were tested, and this year we’re hoping for even bigger numbers.

“As a charity, we’re funded completely through donations and fundraisers. We’re able to give away free, lifesaving tests like the PSA blood tests because of the money raised through events such as our sea swims. Thank you to everyone who donates or gets sponsored - you’re helping us make such a difference to men’s lives.”

Siobhan Robbie-James, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager at Plymouth Argyle, added: “Hosting this event each year is incredibly important to us, and something the Club is genuinely proud to deliver in partnership with The Chestnut Appeal.

“The test is quick, simple, and could save a life. We sincerely hope that our eligible supporters take up this opportunity. Prostate cancer can affect any family - your dad, your son, your brother, your uncle. It could even be you.”
