Argyle receive Green Clubs Gold Award for environmental practices

Argyle have become one of the first EFL Green Clubs to receive a Gold award, and full GreenCode accreditation.

EFL Green Clubs is a league-wide voluntary scheme that supports EFL Clubs to improve their environmental practices and operations. It first launched in 2021 and was updated for the 2024/25 season to introduce a new assessment cycle that awards participating clubs with a status of “Participant”, “Bronze”, “Silver” or “Gold”.

Argyle are one of the first two EFL clubs to receive Gold awards, the other being Bristol City, while Rotherham United are the first Sky Bet League One Club to complete the assessment, receiving ‘Participant’ status.

Argyle were one of the first Green Clubs in 2021 and this year marks our inaugural GreenCode accreditation, alongside our EFL Green Clubs Gold award. As part of our commitment to making a positive impact on the environment, we launched an Energy and Environmental Plan, which in 2022 marked the beginning of our journey towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

To date, our green actions have included procuring 100% clean renewable energy, joining the Network Net Zero Community and partnering with a sustainable cup provider.

EFL Sustainability Co-ordinator, Ben Fisher said: “Everyone at the EFL is delighted to present our first round of Green Club awards and to celebrate their success on our collective journey towards becoming a more environmentally sustainable league. All three clubs have worked tirelessly throughout the process and it was brilliant to have GreenCode on board to help us support the clubs at each stage of the assessment cycle.

“Green Clubs is one of several ways in which the EFL supports clubs to improve their sustainability practices. Throughout the season, we also deliver a full training and support package that enables us to share best practice across the league and to collectively tackle shared challenges in this area.”

Christian Kent, Head of Venue, Hospitality & Events at Argyle, added: “Sustainability is at the heart of what we do at Plymouth Argyle, and as a club known as 'the Greens', we’re proud to be a Green Club in more ways than one.

“Achieving Gold status in the EFL Green Clubs programme and securing GreenCode accreditation is a fantastic recognition of our ongoing commitment to reducing our environmental impact. From using 100% renewable energy to introducing sustainable match-day initiatives, we are continually working to make a positive difference.

“This is an important step on our journey, and we remain dedicated to leading the way in sustainability for our club, our supporters, and the wider community.”
