Argyle started their 2026 SuperCupNI adventure on Monday afternoon, with a comprehensive win over Chicago City.
Head Coach Dan Thompson’s side finished as 8-2 victors at Parker Avenue against the American side they also had success against in last year’s competition.
Despite Chicago taking an early lead just a minute into the match, Argyle's positive, direct play soon worked in their favour on multiple occasions.
Cody Baxter picked up the ball from a clearance, took a touch around an onrushing defender in blue and was fouled in the process, with Joseph Snell converting from the spot to bring the game level.
Just before the 20th minute, the lead was taken. Midfielder Oliver Babb pounced onto a punch from the opponents’ goalkeeper, after an Argyle corner, and found the back of the net with a left-footed strike.
Before the half-time whistle, an own-goal furthered the advantage for the Greens, but the positive play did not stop after the restart.
Within 10 minutes, Argyle's high press came to fruition. Freddie Lewis stole the ball from a loose pass out the back, took a confident touch and slotted the ball home, scoring the fourth of the game.
In 11 minutes of play, from the 48th to 59th minute, four became seven. Two own-goals and a header from substitute Alexander Patton continued the dominant display from Thompson’s Greens.
A consolation goal for Chicago, and a second for Lewis, rounded out the scoring in the match, as Argyle claimed victory in their opening game in Northern Ireland.
Tottenham Hotspur are the next opponents for Argyle, with the game kicking off at 3pm on Tuesday, 28 July, at Broughshane.
