Cleverley previews visit of Huddersfield

Tom Cleverley

Tuesday night’s win over Stevenage at Home Park was Argyle’s fourth midweek game in five weeks.

It has been a period in which the Greens have performed well, continued to pick up points to get them nearer to the play-off places, and have done it all with a reduced squad because of injuries.

The latest game is at home to Huddersfield Town, another side in the thick of the race to finish in the top six, as were Stevenage and Reading, the last two sides Argyle met. And that is before you look ahead to see Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers on the fixture list to come.

At least, though, there will be a free midweek after the Huddersfield match, as a bit of a reset. As ever, though, Tom Cleverley is not really looking past the next game.

“[It is nice to get to] the end of a block, because whenever you get a clear week to work with the players, it always feels like a little bit of breathing space, a little bit of time to work on the training field,” Cleverley told Argyle TV.

“We're looking forward to that but, first things first, we've got a huge game here on Saturday against a strong side who have similar ambitions to us. We're all really excited for that one.

“We're really looking forward to playing every game we approach at the minute, no more than when we're playing here at home. We knew going into the Reading game, we were to face four or five opponents, all above us in the league. That little run started positively with two good results, including a really good performance against Reading. It continues this weekend against Huddersfield, and we're going to do all the basics to the best we can, to give ourselves the best chance of winning.”

Huddersfield’s squad could include former Pilgrim Mickel Miller, and relatively recent departures Bali Mumba and Ryan Hardie.

Liam Manning’s Terriers are seventh in the league, and come to Devon unbeaten in three. They have drawn their two most recent games, but it should be factored in that their 2-2 draw in the week was at home to league leaders Lincoln City, who are 21 games unbeaten, and have drawn just five of those. Huddersfield were 2-0 up, before the Imps clambered back into the game.

“That shows you the quality they've got,” said Tom. “Anyone who can stop the Lincoln juggernaut at the minute is doing a lot of things right. I think since Liam's gone in there, he's tightened them up at the back. For that, they've sacrificed a little bit of creativity, but when you've got players that we know, like Bali and Ryan Hardie, and a lot of players proven at Championship level in their squad, then we know we have to be absolutely at it structurally, defensively, and be focused to make sure we keep them quiet at the other end.

“We're focused absolutely on ourselves, about performing to the best we can, which we've seen a lot recently, and making the game out there Saturday the type of game we want it to be. I'm expecting another exciting game of football.”
