Cleverley thrilled with Stockport win

Argyle boss Tom Cleverley called his side’s 4-2 win over Stockport County ‘the most complete performance’ of his time in charge.

The Greens led 2-0 thanks to a Kyle Wootton own-goal and a wonderful Caleb Watts strike, before a very tame penalty for Stockport, converted by Oliver Norwood, brought County back into it.

Early in the second period, Bradley Ibrahim put Argyle back on an even keel with their third goal, and by the time Lorent Tolaj made it 4-1, the Pilgrims were well on their way to their second win of the season. Wootton narrowed the deficit slightly in injury-time, but the damage had been done.

“Today was all about performance,” Cleverley told Argyle TV. “It would be quite easy to get bogged down with our results in the league.

“Players looked much more free today. It's all about delivering your processes, what you have to do to perform well, and the result will take care of itself. I thought the players looked much more free today for that mentality.

“I thought we were really dangerous in transition. We managed the game really well after half-time.

“It could have been easy to get rocked from the penalty decision, which was controversial, but we came out the blocks flying and then managed the game really well with the substitutes.

“[It was the] most experience we've had on the pitch today, at one time, which helps a lot of young players in our team to navigate through these tricky spells in matches.

“It was the most complete performance we put today. It's important we continue that now.”
