Emirates FA Cup Preview | Wycombe Wanderers (A)

Wycombe Wanderers (A)

The Game
Wycombe Wanderers v Argyle. Adams Park. Saturday, 1 November. 3pm. Emirates FA Cup first round.

The Opposition
Wycombe are 17th in League One, with four wins, four draws and six defeats from 14 games.

The Chairboys only got two points from their opening six league fixtures. They then got their first win, beating Mansfield Town, but, after losing to Peterborough United, they sacked Mike Dodds and replaced him with Michael Duff.

Wycombe’s results have picked up. They have won three of their last six in the league, drawing another two. Most recently, last Saturday, they beat Huddersfield Town 3-0.

In the Carabao Cup, Wycombe got to the fourth round, beating Leyton Orient, Bromley and Wigan Athletic, all away from home, then lost to Premier League Fulham at Adams Park, and only then after a penalty shoot-out.

The Gaffer
Michael Duff was a defender who played for just two league teams – Cheltenham Town and Burnley – playing more than 300 games for each. He also played 24 times for Northern Ireland.

Duff’s first managerial job was at Cheltenham, having spent time coaching in Burnley’s academy. After four years at the helm, he had taken Cheltenham into League One, and achieved their highest-ever finish.

Michael Duff

This led to a role at Barnsley, where in his one season he got to a League One play-off final, but lost to Sheffield Wednesday.

In the summer of 2023, he joined Swansea City, in the Championship, but was sacked before the year’s end. His next job was with Huddersfield Town, in League One, but was dismissed by the Terriers after nine months, with Huddersfield in mid-table.

The Squad
Luke Leahy has played all 14 of Wycombe’s league games this season. The 32-year-old has represented Falkirk, Walsall, Bristol Rovers, Shrewsbury Town and now Wycombe in a distinguished career. For much of it, Leahy was a left-back, but in recent years he has become a central midfielder. He is also adept at free-kicks and penalties.

Fred Onyedinma’s career has seemingly revolved around his various stints as a Wycombe player. Nigeria-born Fred’s first club was Millwall, for whom he played well over 100 games, but at the start of his Millwall career he had a loan spell with Wycombe, and returned for another four years later. This led to a permanent move to Buckinghamshire, and another two years with Wanderers, before leaving for Luton Town. After three years at Luton, including a loan at Rotherham United, Onyedinma returned to Wycombe in 2024. Now 28, he has scored three times this season.

Jack Grimmer

Club captain Jack Grimmer (above), 31, has now played 231 games for the Chairboys, having joined from Coventry City in 2019. The defender, who has played at both right-back and central defence this season, began his football career with hometown side Aberdeen, before moving south to Fulham. Following loans at Port Vale and Shrewsbury, Grimmer moved to Coventry, where he played 66 times.

Previous Meetings
The last season Argyle played Wycombe in the league was in 2022/23. The Pilgrims won both games 1-0, with Sam Cosgrove’s penalty the difference at Adams Park, and Dan Scarr getting the winning goal at Home Park later in the season.
