Argyle progressed through to the second round of the FA Youth Cup after goals from Tashall Sandhu, Kian Burch, and James Sharpe clinched a 3-0 victory at Home Park.
Sandhu, a part of a lot of Argyle’s good work all evening, cut in from the left and curled an unstoppable strike into the far top corner to give Argyle the lead.
Tegan Finn and Seb Campbell both had chances to add to that advantage before Kian Burch struck the post following his introduction in the second half.
Jamie Lowry’s side did then kill the game off late on as Burch poked into the bottom corner and Sharpe curled a beautiful shot beyond the visitors' goalkeeper.
After a cagey opening five minutes with neither side able to put any sort of consistent pressure together, it was the visitors who had the first chance of the evening.
Argyle were penalised for a foul 30 yards from goal and Billy Wimble shot, but his effort was high over the crossbar.
Sandhu then had his first involvement as he cut in from the left, weaving past two Mangotsfield defenders and striking at goal, but Jack Sheppard was equal to it and saved comfortably.
Campbell and Finn then showed signs of their first-team promise, with the latter putting in a dangerous low cross that the visitors managed to clear. The ball went only as far as Joe Mwaro though who crossed for the head of Frankie Maund, but he couldn’t direct it goalwards when unmarked.
Argyle began to show their superiority in possession and Finn drifted inside from the right and fired a shot at goal, but he couldn’t find the target.
The visitors then had their first clear-cut chance of the night with Masood Garder getting on the end of a ricochet and almost rounded Flower, but the Argyle goalkeeper came out quickly to smother the ball and Sam Hayman cleared.
Finn and Campbell then combined again to see the latter through on goal in the right of the penalty area, but he could only find the side netting from a tight angle.
Sandhu then gave Argyle the lead in the 35th minute, as he picked up the ball on the left and curled a stunning effort into the far top corner that gave Sheppard no chance.
Finn should have made it two after a sumptuous through ball from Campbell saw him break through on goal, but just as the winger was about to shoot, Isaac Comerford got back brilliantly to make a tackle and put the ball behind.
Argyle started the second half brightly with Malachi Davy and Sandhu combining on the left. The latter crossed low for Campbell, but he couldn’t quite connect to finish beyond Sheppard.
Davy was once again the provider for Argyle, whipping in a low cross which Mangotsfield had to put behind for a corner. Campbell took the corner and almost found Mwaro, but he missed his kick.
Burch was introduced for Jamie Lowry’s side and immediately looked lively. He picked up the ball centrally, fed Mwaro who saw his initial low cross cleared back to him and the defender found Burch who shot goalwards, but could only find the roof of the net.
He was then at the centre of more Argyle good play as he picked up the ball on the edge of the box and saw a shot clip off the far post.
Moments later, Toby Maclean conceded a soft free kick wide on the right, that Mangotsfield swung into the area and found the head of Pablo Benitez Dorado, but he couldn’t hit the target.
That was the last of the chances for the visitors as Argyle finally killed the game off late on, with the game getting more stretched.
Sandhu added an assist to his earlier goal as he drove to the byline and cut back for Burch to finish into the bottom corner.
Substitute Sharpe then curled a first-time effort into the far corner to score Argyle’s third and clinch a spot in the second-round draw.
A good evening’s work for Lowry’s youthful side.
