Argyle Women return to FA Women’s National League Cup action this Sunday when they welcome Torquay United to Home Park.
The fixture will be important both on and off the pitch for the Pilgrims, with all ticket money from the game being donated to former Argyle player Roxy Thomas’ fundraising campaign.
Thomas, who is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumour, came through Argyle’s pathway and made her first-team debut aged 16, before joining Torquay in the summer of 2025.
Current Argyle Women boss Matt Green coached the left-back during her time at the club.
He said: “Roxy has had a traumatic time lately and she is a former player of ours, so we thought it would be a great support to her and her family for all the ticket money that comes through from Sunday’s game to be donated to her fundraising page.
“She played in our post-16 programme last year with Kiesha [Walker] and Shana [Dolbel] and the news has affected a lot of people. So, from everyone at the football club, our thoughts and prayers go to Roxy and her family.”
The game is also set to be a vital one on the pitch, with Argyle sitting second in the qualifying group, while Torquay are top.
The Pilgrims have enjoyed success in the League Cup in recent campaigns, reaching the semi-finals two years ago before making it to the final last season.
Green is now hoping his young side can produce a more attacking performance after facing two difficult league tests against Portsmouth and Oxford United.
“People look at results and say you have been beaten – yes, we accept that,” he said. “But the learnings that our players have taken from those games will be massive.
“What we said to them after the game is that now they have got to take that high intensity and those patterns of play into these next couple of games.”
Argyle have already shown their ability to win in the competition this season, beating Marine Academy Plymouth 2-1 in their opening game.
They will now face a Torquay side in fine form, with former Pilgrims coach Ryan Perks in charge.
Green knows the Derby will provide an added edge, with both sides determined to claim all three points at Home Park.
“There will be some players on that pitch who definitely will not want to get beaten here against us,” Green said. “I am sure Ryan will want to come back and prove a point as well.
“But there are lots of different parts to this game that we have just got to go and attack and see what we can get.”
With a place in the next stage of the competition in sight, Argyle will be looking to return to winning ways in front of a home crowd.
