After picking up two wins from two games to start their FAWNL Cup campaign, Argyle Women are hoping to top Group A with a victory over Bristol Rovers on Sunday.
Decisive triumphs over Marine Academy Plymouth and Bridgwater United have placed Marie Hourihan’s side in good stead to claim first place, but the Gas Women have started their Tier Four season in fine form.
Rovers are unbeaten across seven games, conceding only one goal in all competitions. Assistant Head Coach Matt Green is aware of the threat that the hosts possess, but believes the Greens can use their confident style of play to come away with three points from this game, to be played the home of Yate Town.
“Rovers are unbeaten so far this season,” Green told Argyle TV. “They’re sitting third in their league, which is a fantastic start for the season for them, and have just conceded just one goal in the cup, against Bridgwater. We have to respect their current form but, likewise, we're in a good vein of form as well and are going into the game with a lot of confidence.
“The objective at the start of this cup competition was to win the group and go through to the next round. That doesn't change. We'll go there with all the intentions to win the game, get three points, and make safe passage into the knock-out stages of the competition. Momentum is key in football, as we keep saying. We'll take our league form into the cup and, hopefully, get that win.”
Argyle have taken ten points from their opening five league games, the latest being a 4-0 win against Lewes, way from home.
“Our win against Lewes has given everyone a buzz,” said Green. “Now, it's about keeping everyone level-headed. We can't get carried away with one result. Lewes was an exceptional performance for us. We've looked back at that game, analysed our own performance, and a lot of good stuff that came from that, but there are some areas of improvement, as there always is. As staff, our objective is to improve each week and get stronger and better.
“I think [Rovers] would like to get one over on us. They're in the league below us, so there is some slight pressure on us to go and get the result. It’s at their ground and it’s never easy to go away and play, so we'll expect them to come after us. They're not going to sit back and just soak up pressure.
“As always, we'll take care of ourselves. We’ve got our game plan, which we'll try to implement. The girls have done fantastically well over the last few weeks to implement exactly what we've asked them to do, so nothing will change from our point of view.”
