Green previews cup trip to league rivals

Argyle continue their hunt for FA Women’s National League Cup glory on Sunday afternoon, when travelling to Orbital Fasteners Stadium to face Watford.

After suffering a 2-0 defeat to the Golden Girls in league play earlier in the season, Marie Hourihan’s side have gone on an eight-game unbeaten run, winning six games and drawing two in all competitions.

Victories over Marine Academy Plymouth, Bridgwater United and Bristol Rovers placed the Greens on top of Group A in the cup competition, setting up the tie against the Hertfordshire side.

Last season, Argyle reached the semi-final of the FAWNL Cup, losing to Stoke City in the last four, with the Potters coached at the time by Hourihan.

Assistant Head Coach Matt Green shared his thoughts ahead of Sunday’s tie, focusing on the squad’s positivity and momentum as key factors for potential victory.

“We all came away from that league game [at Watford] with a little disappointment,” Green told Argyle TV. “I thought we should have got something out of that game.

“It was early in the season, though, and we were still trying to find our feet with how we wanted to play, and now we’ve embraced it. We see it as a different prospect this time around with the confidence and momentum that we've got from previous games. We’re going to take a lot of spirit and confidence into this fixture.

“It’s an opportunity to right our wrongs and look to progress in a competition that we've done well in previously. They've gone top in the league with a win last week, so they might be favourites.

“Our remit this year is to go and win games of football. Whether that's in the league or a knockout game in a cup competition, that won't change. We'll go into every game to try and get the three points or to go through to the next round, so I don't think our planning changes at all.”

Argyle’s last match was against AFC Bournemouth, who came to Home Park top of the league. The game ended in a 0-0 draw in front of nearly 1,500 fans, and Matt was delighted with how the Greens performed in PL2, hoping that the display can continue on the road this weekend.

“It was a good point,” he said. “Our home form has been excellent, and we kept that unbeaten run going, so confidence is high. It was a good display at the weekend, and we shouldn't be disappointed with the fact that we’ve taken that point.

“Yes, we feel that we could have gone on and won the game by taking those opportunities and chances in the final thirds, but confidence is there. We’ll go into this weekend full of it to go and win a game of football.”
