Argyle Women picked up an important three points away from home on Sunday, with a 2-0 victory over Cheltenham Town.
Charlotte Whitmore’s first-half strike and Phoebie Poole’s penalty kick conversion handed the Greens a win, alongside a stellar defensive performance from all involved.
Wins for AFC Bournemouth and Watford, respectively, means Argyle still sit in third place in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division table, but momentum places Marie Hourihan’s side in good standing.
After the full-time whistle, Hourihan shared her positive thoughts and how a dominant second-half display propelled her side to victory in Gloucestershire.
“We knew coming into the game today that it would be a really difficult game,” the Head Coach told Argyle TV. “Coming to their home venue, where they've got a really good record, we knew it would be a battle, and I think the first 15 to 20 minutes certainly proved that. It took us that little bit of time to adjust, but I felt that towards the latter end of the first half, we started to establish a little more control.
“We had a disallowed goal, but then, just before half-time, we took the lead, which settled us. Going into the second half, it was about managing the game, and I thought we did that brilliantly. I thought the back four dealt with the direct play excellently, our distances were really good, and overall, the second half performance was a well-managed and professional showing.
“For our second goal, it was an excellent run from Tianna [Teisar], and then Phoebie [Poole] put the penalty away. I’m delighted to get the three points and clean sheet on the road again, but now we move on to next weekend.
“Not everything's always going to go your way in football. It's about how much grit and determination you show and doing the basics really well. I think, in the second half, we did that superbly. The main positive for me is that we've come away from a difficult place, where a lot of teams find it challenging, with the three points.”
