Argyle Under-18s will be looking to make it six wins from six in the EFL Youth Alliance League when they travel to face Newport County at noon today.
Jamie Lowry’s side have made a perfect start to their league campaign, winning all five of their opening fixtures having scored 23 goals, leaving them top of the table.
However, the Argyle Head Coach has challenged his players to maintain their performance levels as they look to continue their impressive run against 20th-place Newport.
“We cannot just turn up and expect to win,” Lowry said.
“We have to drive the standards ourselves, make sure we are at it and continue to hit the levels that we have so far across the season.
”Even though Newport are not at the top of the league the boys will need to have the right mindset going into the game.”
That mindset will be particularly important after a demanding spell that has seen the squad deal with several matches and long journeys within a short period of time.
Lowry says he has been impressed by how his squad have managed the workload.
“It has been a lot, especially for the first years coming into a programme of full-time football that they will not have experienced before,” he said.
“We support them in terms of their nutrition and recovery as it is such a key part of playing Tuesdays, Saturdays and Wednesdays.
“But it is a credit to them and their efforts that we have not had many injuries, which is brilliant.”
Despite the demands of the schedule, Lowry is pleased with how Argyle have continued to show a strong attacking threat, with goals coming from across the team.
Lowry said: “Our midfielders can score goals, and the three strikers that we have in the squad all score too.
”How we want to play is very attacking. We look to play forwards whenever we can. For us, it is all about hurting teams and creating chances.
“But, as a team, it is about being hard to play against and being disciplined, keeping clean sheets and working as hard out of possession as when we have the ball.”
The Greens will now look to put those principles into practice once again as they look to extend their perfect league record in South Wales.
