The Opposition
Crystal Palace Under-21s have had a mixed start to their Premier League 2 season, winning one, drawing one and losing one. They shared the points with Arsenal on the opening day; Zavier Gozo's strike was cancelled out by Andre Harriman-Annous in the second period.
In their next game, Palace beat Aston Villa 2-0. Ben Casey and Adler Nascimento both netted second-half goals to ensure victory for Darren Powell's side. Their first test in the Jersey Mike's Trophy followed; they saw off Sky Bet League Two opposition, Swindon Town, at the Nigel Eady County Ground. Despite going behind, goals from Caleb Kporha and Sebastian Williams earned the Young Eagles victory.
On Saturday, Powell's team lost for the first time. Both Casey and Williams missed penalties before Taha Majni was sent off, giving Blackburn Rovers the opportunity to win the game - which they took. Palace will be looking to make it two wins from two in the Jersey Mike's Trophy tonight and edge closer to qualification for the knockout stage for the first time.
The Gaffer
Darren Powell will be the man in charge of the visitors at Home Park this evening. The 50-year-old made over 250 appearances across the EFL and Premier League as a centre-back in a career that spanned 17 years. During that time, he played for Hampton & Richmond Borough, Brentford, Crystal Palace, West Ham United, Southampton, Derby County and MK Dons.
Powell took charge of his boyhood side Hampton & Richmond Borough in 2013, in the seventh tier of English football. Following his stint in London, Powell enrolled on the Elite Coaches Apprenticeship Scheme and acquired his A license before re-joining Crystal Palace in 2015, this time as an academy coach.
Eight years after joining the Eagles, the former defender was appointed head coach of the under-21s team when Roy Hodgson returned as first team manager in 2023. In the past two seasons, Powell has led Palace to quarter-final and semi-final finishes in the Premier League 2’s knockout stage. Last week, his team enjoyed a successful start to their Jersey Mike’s Trophy campaign, beating Swindon Town 2-1 in the opening game of Group E.
Previous Meeting
It was during the 2022/23 campaign that we last faced Crystal Palace Under-21s in this competition. The only Argyle player that still remains at the club from that game is Caleb Roberts, who is eligible to play this time around, despite being out on loan at Torquay United. The Greens ran out 1-0 victors after Niall Ennis netted in the first minute of second-half stoppage time to win the three points for Steven Schumacher's side.
