Lowry previews U18s' trip to Bristol Rovers

Wednesday, 8 April was the start of a seven-day cycle for Argyle’s Under-18s, taking in three games.

It started with a Derby against Exeter City, and Jamie Lowry’s boys obliged with a 4-1 win on the short trip to East Devon.

Next comes a slightly longer journey, to Bristol Rovers, on Saturday, before a home game against Portsmouth on Tuesday.

Lowry, understandably, was delighted with how the trio of games kicked off, with the Exeter win displaying a lot of good qualities across the board.

“It was a really good day, a really good performance,” Lowry told Argyle TV. “I think that's the most pleasing thing. The performance was there. We had a real competitive edge to us, which we should do in a Devon Derby.

“I think recent results haven't been great, performances have been okay, but we’d lost that little bit of an edge out of possession, a little bit of an edge that you need to go and win, especially local Derby games.

“We've turned to [the players] after the game to say that performance, especially out of possession, finding a way to win a game in the appropriate way, is what we have to do more often. That's probably been a bit of our downfall this season where we've been okay in possession, but out of possession we've been too nice to play against.

“It's probably a little bit easier in the Devon Derby because of rivals and growing up playing against them. Bristol Rovers will be different; Portsmouth will be a little bit different on Tuesday. It's about having that consistency, that mentality going into the game, to have that little edge about us in every single game we play.

“It will be a close game [against Rovers]. Again, it's about us. We do a little bit of review and feedback on them, but it's mainly about us, what we can control and what we can bring to the game. So again, that little bit of an edge out of possession, that little bit of edge as a team, as a group. Then, in possession, expect us to be nice and calm on the ball, play our patterns that we work on during the week, and be really effective going forward.

“The recovery in between the games is important. Obviously, we'll look after them in terms of the detail and the tactical work, but in terms of their legs being able to recover, being as close to full fitness as they can be for the games coming up, is really important.”
