Argyle Under-18s are hoping to continue their winning run on Saturday morning, when they host Newport County at Millennium Fields (11am).
Coming into the EFL Youth Alliance League South match in the South West, the Greens are hoping to make it three wins in a row, after picking up victories against Mangotsfield United and AFC Wimbledon in the FA Youth Cup and league, respectively.
Newport currently sit second from bottom in the Southern section, with only one win through 12 games, whilst Argyle are 12th out of 21, with four wins from 11.
Head Coach Jamie Lowry believes his side are aware, now, of what needs to be done to pick up a third win in a row, but also knows that table position and current form can mean nothing on the day.
“Our standards are now set, after the Wimbledon game,” Lowry told Argyle TV. “That’s the challenge to the boys. As an all-round performance, as I alluded to after the game, that was the best we've had this season, and that's something we need to continue and carry over. We need to build on setting those standards and then continue to move forward.
“It’s about building consistency. That's a massive part of football – having your standards as high as possible and being able to hit that consistency with your peak performance each game collectively as a team but, as well, it's individually important for them for their improvement and development. As a group, we need to continue good performances and the momentum.
“It’s great to have that confidence moving into Monday and leading through the week, off the back of two wins, and we did see that, but the boys must start again with their mentality. It's a fresh week, build on it, keep improving and working harder, doing the basics, and that will hopefully lead into Saturday and give us a positive performance.
“We don't take league position for granted or previous results. We must play the game properly from our point of view. Newport will be physical and well organised from the coach, but again, we do our homework on them and where their strengths and weaknesses are, but we're really focused on us at the moment and how we can continue to maintain our performances.
“Individually, it's important that the boys keep improving and realise what's got us this success recently, and keep applying it in their one-on-ones and defending. That's all really important, but overall, it's about our team performance.
“The more nine out of ten performances we have individually across the pitch, will make the team performance even better.”
