Jay Matete has capped a brilliant first month as a Pilgrim by being named your Player of the Month for January.

The energetic midfielder made his Argyle debut on 7 January, as a substitute at Bolton Wanderers in 0-0 draw, having only signed on loan from Sunderland the day before.

Matete subsequently started the games against Bristol Rovers in the Papa Johns Trophy, and against Ipswich Town and Cheltenham Town in Sky Bet League One. He impressed in each with his tenacity, work ethic and willingness to get involved in all aspects of midfield play.

Matete narrowly won the vote ahead of goalkeeper Mike Cooper, with Jay polling 35.9% of the vote to Mike’s 34%. Macauley Gillepshey was third with 20.7% of the 1,127 total votes, with James Wilson on 9.4%.

On winning the award, Jay said: "I've enjoyed my first month here, it's been really good. We've picked up some great results on the way.

"I'm delighted to have won the award. I just want to kick on now - it would be nice to win some more Player of the Month awards, but most important hopefully we keep winning games."
