Matt Green on his side's first Home Park test

Matt Green

Argyle Women face their first home game of the 2026/27 league season when they take on AFC Wimbledon at Home Park on Sunday (2pm).

Matt Green’s Greens took on Swindon Town last weekend, and were 2-1 up at half-time before a Robins fightback turned the game around, but Argyle’s young squad showed plenty of signs of ability and fight that has given their Head Coach cause for optimism heading into the weekend.

After a summer of immense turnover, and with a large number of the squad inexperienced teenagers, elements of Sunday could be a little daunting, but Green, speaking to Argyle TV, expressed his pleasure at how his charges are growing as a unit and as individuals, and how a chance to sample the Home Park pitch has been part of preparations.

“The group have worked really hard this week,” said Matt. “They are, most of them, about to play on Home Park for the very first time. We’ve been lucky, thanks to the ground staff and people behind the scenes, that we’ve been allowed to train on Home Park this week. It won’t be new to them.

“It relaxes the players. They are around the stadium anyway, but it’s different when you stand on the pitch, in your position, and go through patterns of play on what is probably the biggest pitch in the league. We want to make Home Park somewhere we feel comfortable, and it’s good to get them on the pitch.

“We’ve done the analysis as we always do. [Wimbledon are] a physical side; they’ve got good pace and strength on their top line. They’ve had change in the summer as well, so there’s a bit of an unknown on some of their squad, but there’re areas we think we think we can exploit, so that’s where we’ll go after.

“The group want to learn. That’s the takeaway we’ve had since day one. They ask ‘why’. ‘Why are we doing this, why are we doing that’ which is fantastic. They are excited, there will be a few nerves on Sunday, which is understandable with the age of the squad. We will look for the experienced players we’ve brought in to steady the nerves of the younger players. We’ll be ready.”
