Matt Green praised the resilience of his Argyle Women side after they secured a 1-0 win against Torquay United at Home Park.
Brooklyn Brothers’ superb free-kick proved decisive, with the 16-year-old’s strike giving the Pilgrims a second win in three FA Women’s National League Cup group games.
“It was a good win,” Green said. “This group have been resilient all season. We spoke about it midweek, but those two last league games [against Portsmouth and Oxford United] have given us that resilience and shown that we can defend when we need to.
“In the second half, I was a little bit frustrated. I don’t think we kept the ball as well as we did in the first half and we gave away too many sloppy passes.
“I don’t think it was the best football match that people have seen, but it is important for us to get the win.
“Credit to Torquay, they came at us in that second half and created a few chances, but the girls stood strong, got blocks in where they needed to and we came away with the win.
”Overall, it has been a good afternoon.”
The result sees Argyle finish second in their group on six points, with Bridgwater United topping the group.
The Pilgrims will now wait to discover whether their points and goal difference are enough to secure one of the 10 best runners-up places across the 22 groups and progress to the next round, or whether they will enter the Plate competition.
Argyle made a positive start to the contest, with Brothers’ excellent free-kick giving them an early advantage.
Green was full of praise for the young midfielder, who has only recently turned 16. He said: “She is a player that I know can deliver in those moments. It was a great set piece from her and having only just come into the side at her age makes it very impressive.
“We spoke about her having a go at goal early on to test their keeper, and that is what she did.
“Brook is another one of our youngsters who we can really look forward to watching play.”
The victory gives Argyle an opportunity to carry some confidence into their return to league action next weekend, when they return to Home Park to host Real Bedford.
“It is important for this group to get those wins under their belt and show that as a squad they can win games of football,” Green said.
“We will go back into the league campaign next week. We know where we are in the league, and how tough that division is going to be this season, but we will do our homework on Real Bedford and get a gameplan together that will hopefully give us three points.”
Sunday afternoon was also important off the pitch, with both clubs coming together to show their support for former Argyle player and current Torquay defender Roxy Thomas, who is undergoing treatment for a brain tumour.
Green praised the atmosphere created by the two sets of supporters at Home Park, with all ticket proceeds from the game to be donated to Roxy’s fundraiser in support of her and her family.
Argyle’s Head Coach said: “I think the crowd were fantastic. Women’s football is a community-based sport, and I thought everyone involved did their part.
“There was a lot of emotion in the build-up to the game, and during kick-off, but it was great to see everyone coming together to show support for Roxy and her family.”
