Argyle travel to Cheltenham Town on Sunday, looking to build on the positives from recent performances and secure their first FA Women’s National League points of the season.

The Pilgrims face a Cheltenham side sitting just two points above them in the table, with the opportunity for Argyle to climb off the foot of the table with a win.

Head Coach Matt Green recognises the importance of the fixture and is eager to see his young squad turn their hard work on the training ground into a positive result.

He said: “It is definitely the biggest game of the season for us so far. There is pressure that comes with that as both Cheltenham and us will want to get those three points.

“For us, can we get that first win? I think we deserve it as a group. The girls train fantastically well every week. They take on board all our messages and they have tried to implement them in every single game we’ve played this year.”

Argyle head to Gloucestershire aiming to build on the encouraging elements of last weekend’s performance against Real Bedford, when Shana Dolbel’s long-range strike gave them a half-time lead before their opponents fought back to win 3-1.

Despite the result, Green believes his side can learn from that experience, with the focus during the past week on breeding the elements of their game that are needed to turn promising performances into results.

“Even though we lost, it was still a good performance and there were a lot of positives to take from it,” he said. “After looking at that game, there are now a couple of good habits across the squad that are becoming built-in, rather than just one-offs.

“We’ve spoken about that this week. Hopefully we can take what we’ve learned and what we’ve gone through in training to make sure that we get that victory on Sunday.”

The prospect that Argyle could leapfrog Sunday’s opponents with a win is a promising one for Green. He believes it could be significant for a squad who are still gelling and improving every week.

Green said: “If we do get that win, we go above Cheltenham, and I think from a psychological point of view that would be massive for such a young team.

“But it’s easy talking about it. You have got to go and do it on the pitch, and doing [the best that we can] will be our focus in the game.”

The Pilgrims kick off at 2pm on Sunday at the Everyone’s Energy Stadium, Kayte Lane, home of Bishop’s Cleeve.
