Matt Green's first words as Argyle Women Head Coach

Matt Green being interviewed for Argyle TV

On Tuesday afternoon, Matt Green was announced as the new Head Coach of the Argyle Women’s team.

Having been a coach within the Home Park system for several years, and further experience in the women’s game prior to working for Argyle, Green will step into the position with support from Argyle Director of Football Derek Adams, Assistant Head Coach Jon Dawe and further staff.

Speaking on his appointment, Green shared his happiness but understood the tough position Argyle may find themselves in compared to the season just gone.

“I’m really honoured to be in this position at such a massive football club,” he told Argyle TV. “There are lots of expectations that go with the role, but my initial and immediate reaction is pride to sit in the seat, and I look forward to taking the team forward into the upcoming season.

“Once you get into coaching, you always want to look at how far you can go. Being a head coach might not have been on my radar straightaway but I feel it's the right time for me to step into this position.

“Jon [Dawe] and I complement each other really well. He’s been at the football club for around five years now, and we've worked very closely together over the last four years, so to have him on board was a big and key part for me.

“The first conversation I had was with Jon to ask if he'd like to step up and be the Assistant Head Coach, and he said ‘yes’, which was a massive tick, so we'll work really closely together, talk about everything and anything, and make sure we've got the team in the right state to go out on the pitch.

“My whole coaching journey has been in women's football, so it's what I know best. I don't have any fears or anything coming into leading a women's team. I've been in and around it for the last eight years, so I’m set fair, and excited.”

Last season, Argyle, then managed by Marie Hourihane, came agonisingly close to WSL2 promotion, sitting just one point behind Watford in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division table and suffering defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Play-Off Final.

The upcoming campaign will be different for Argyle, with several changes across all aspects of the club coming in, but Green still believes that the experiences, both high and low, have laid strong foundations for him and co. to continue in 2026/27.

Green explained: “Last season we had great togetherness, from the squad to the staff to the backroom team. Everybody was together, and that was the biggest thing for us last year. We had great players at the club; Marie's attention to detail was phenomenal, and that’s something that we'll look at and like to continue.

“One of the biggest learning curves that Jon and I had last year was seeing the amount of detail that goes into the analysis, match prep and the training side of things. From a learning point of view for both of us, I think it's fair to say last year was massive, and that's why I feel comfortable sitting in this position now.

“I think the growth of the club has been immense when comparing it to when I started three or four years ago. The trust did a great job with the team. The club then decided to take it on and moved it in a slightly different direction, and last year was a reward for lots of people, in terms of what we achieved. We just narrowly missed out on promotion, which was our focus for the whole season, but we're excited and looking forward to what you could class as a new era at the football club.

“Since the announcement, my phone has been red hot, with lots of people touching base and contacting me, which is great! There are a lot of people out there who want to get involved, work for, and play for this football club, which is great to see and hear.

“The next stage is about building the squad and having lots of conversations with a few individuals straightaway, which I'll get around to doing over the next few days. We'll look for a squad that's got some experience in it, as well as providing the local youth with opportunities to play at this football club, which we will do through the pathway, and that’s fantastic. We do need to bring in some senior players as well, however, through whatever means.

“We're not coming into this season just to make up the numbers. We want to be as competitive as we can. We've got the best stadium in the league, in my opinion, and need to utilise that like we did last year.

“We need everyone to come in and get behind the girls. We've got the infrastructure here, we’ve got Foulston Park and Harpers, which we're able to utilise when we can, so everything is here for us to be successful.

“We will go into this league campaign, give it our best shot and aim as high as we can.”
