Murphy Cooper Speaks Upon Joining Argyle

On Tuesday, goalkeeper Murphy Cooper became Argyle’s latest signing, penning a two-year deal at Home Park.

The 24-year-old completed a move from Sky Bet Championship side Queens Park Rangers, in the first permanent transfer of his career.

Speaking to Argyle TV, Cooper said: “I’m really, really, excited. I can’t wait to get going and meet all the fans.

“I really wanted to be invested in the club I was joining, and I really wanted to pick the right one. I’m buzzing and delighted to be here, and I can’t wait to get going.

“I wanted to go somewhere where I felt wanted and appreciated, and I definitely felt like that here.

“My girlfriend’s moving down, so we are really invested in the club and the area. We are really excited.”

The goalkeeper would go on to discuss how conversations with Head Coach Tom Cleverley, Goalkeeper Coach Mike Stowell, and former Argyle Goalkeeper Coach Darryl Flahavan, who worked with Cooper during a loan move to Sheffield Wednesday last season, had helped convince him to become a Pilgrim.

Cooper said: “My remit in leaving was to go and kick on somewhere now, develop my game and keep playing games. I felt this was the perfect pathway to play and develop, to keep improving and get more experience.

“I spoke to Flavs [Darryl Flahavan], he was the goalie coach here when I played here last season, and he had nothing but good things to say about the club, the staff, the fans, and the place to live.

“I had lots of positive chats with people that had played for the club previously or coached here and everyone spoke extremely highly of the club.

“I had two really positive chats with the gaffer and Stowelly, the goalie coach.

“I spoke to my agent who knows Stowelly very well, he said he is a top, top coach, and I got that impression from speaking with him straight away.”

When asked about what sort of a goalkeeper he is, Cooper described how his past experiences, despite still being young, have helped to shape him.

He said: “As a 24-year-old goalkeeper I feel like I obviously could have played a lot more games, but I feel I’m in a good position, I’ve played a good chunk of games, I’ve got a good bit of experience.

“I just want to keep on adding to that and work as hard as I can to be the best goalkeeper I can be for the Argyle fans and the club.

“I’m a brave goalkeeper; I think first and foremost the most important thing is shot-stopping, keeping the ball out of the net.

“From a young age I loved diving at people’s feet and getting kicked in the face, diving in the mud!

“That to me is the best thing ever, making a big save in a big moment; that’s what I buzz off.

“I pride myself in doing anything and everything to keep the ball out of the net.

“I’m good with the ball at my feet. I’m very vocal and very loud, I’ll help organise the team as best as possible and come for crosses.”
