The Game
Argyle vs AFC Wimbledon. Home Park. Saturday, 10 October. 12.30pm. Sky Bet League One.
The Opposition
After finishing the 2025/26 campaign in 19th place and just four points clear of relegation, the aim for Johnnie Jackson’s side this term will be to extend that gap. They survived their first season back in the third tier following promotion out of Sky Bet League Two, now they will want to build on that.
The Dons began the season in disappointing fashion, losing 3-0 on the opening day away at Huddersfield Town. They followed this up with a 0-0 draw against Reading before notching their first win the following week against Wigan Athletic. A blip came against Burton Albion, they lost heavily at Pirelli Stadium, before a win at Bromley.
Jackson’s side have not lost any of their last four in the league; following the victory against Bromley they beat Doncaster Rovers and drew against both MK Dons and Cambridge United. They head to Home Park today looking to make it five games without defeat and further boost themselves up the table from the 9th place they currently reside.
The Gaffer
44-year-old manager Johnnie Jackson grew up in London and represented Tottenham Hotspur on the pitch as a youngster. Loan spells came in the Football League with Swindon Town, Colchester United, Coventry City, Watford and Derby County. The former England youth international departed White Hart Lane and had permanent stints with Colchester, Notts County and Charlton Athletic before retiring in 2018.
Jackson would remain at Charlton as a coach working under Lee Bowyer for a few years before becoming caretaker manager in 2021. When Nigel Adkins was appointed, Jackson resumed his role as a coach but was asked to step up again following Adkins' sacking just months later. Nine wins in 13 saw Jackson appointed permanently part way through 2021/22, but was sacked at the end of the season after a run of poor results.
Just over two weeks later, the Englishman was announced as AFC Wimbledon’s manager, where he remains in his post to this day. It has been steady improvement for the Dons under the stewardship of Jackson, culminating in promotion to Sky Bet League One in 2025. He has now surpassed four years in charge of the Dons and has them a steady and consistent third-tier outfit.
Ones to Watch
Former England youth international Josef Bursik started out at AFC Wimbledon before joining Stoke City as a youngster. Whilst with the Potters, he was loaned to Hednesford Town, Telford United, Accrington Stanley, Doncaster Rovers, Peterborough United and Lincoln City. Belgian First Division outfit Club Brugge recruited the keeper and loaned him to Hibernian. Bursik returned to England in 2025 to join Portsmouth, who have subsequently loaned the 26-year-old to AFC Wimbledon.
Grenada international Myles Hippolyte had to forge his career in non-league, featuring for Southall, Tamworth, Hayes & Yeading and Burnham following his release from Brentford. In 2014, the midfielder headed to Scotland to sign for second-tier side Livingston, also going on to play for divisional rivals Falkirk, St. Mirren and Dunfermline Athletic. Hippolyte returned to England in 2019 to spend a season at Yeovil Town before 18 months with Scunthorpe United. Next came a fruitful spell at Stockport County, in which the 31-year-old achieved a double promotion before arriving at AFC Wimbledon in 2024.
Central defender Dan Sweeney was at AFC Wimbledon as a junior but was not offered professional terms and was therefore released in 2013. The defender went on to make a name for himself in non-league, featuring for Kingstonian, Dulwich Hamlet and Maidstone United. Sweeney made the jump into the Football League in 2016 with Barnet; he remained at The Hive Stadium for just over two years. Following this came a successful stint at Forest Green Rovers, in which he won the Sky Bet League Two title. Stevenage would subsequently pick up the 32-year-old, where he then spent four seasons before returning to boyhood club AFC Wimbledon this summer.
Team News
Alex Hartridge could be back in the squad for Saturday's game against AFC Wimbledon, having not been involved since the beginning of September.
Julio Pleguezuelo is still recovering from his knee injury and could be involved next weekend against Huddersfield Town; Wimbledon will likely come too soon, though.
Malachi Boateng, Michael Baidoo and Owen Oseni are all longer-term absentees with returns penciled in towards the end of the month.
Previous Meeting
It was an away day to remember back in April last time we faced AFC Wimbledon. Alex Mitchell kicked off our trip to the capital with a goal inside the opening ten minutes, poking in at the far post following a corner. Alistair Smith levelled the game early in the second half, converting James Tilley's cross. Lorent Tolaj scored in spectacular style to put the Greens back ahead before Bim Pepple sealed the result, making it 3-1 in the 76th minute.
