Argyle Women break from league action this weekend and turn focus to the FAWNL Cup, where they will travel away from home to take on Cardiff City Ladies at the Amdani Arena.

Argyle will look to end their spell of disappointing results this weekend and continue to build on a positive start to their cup campaign following a 4-1 win over Exeter City that secured their place in the League Cup last month.

Ryan Perks’ side dominated the Exeter encounter from start to finish, having a two-goal lead at half-time. Striker Ellie Sara was able to secure herself a hat-trick minutes into the start of the second half, but Exeter’s Ishbel Zuurmond denied the Greens a clean sheet shortly afterwards. The final goal of the match came from Charlotte Whitmore, who sealed the victory for the Greens with a composed finish into the bottom corner.

“The result of the Exeter match shows what this group of girls are capable of on the pitch,” said Perks, in reflection. “Since that game, we’ve had some tough matches in the league and although the results haven’t been what we’d hoped, the girls’ character and determination on the pitch hasn’t dropped. The League Cup gives us a chance to reset and analyse ourselves, as well as try new things so that we can come away with a positive result away from home this weekend and build upon It for our return to league action.”

Like Argyle, Cardiff will be looking to bounce back from recent league results with a win on home soil. The Dragons’ previous fixture in the league cup saw the Welsh side triumph 3-1 over AFC Sudbury.

This match is not the first time the Greens have faced Cardiff in the FAWNL Cup. Argyle triumphed 2-1 over Cardiff at Home Park at the beginning of the year and manager Ryan Perks is eager to achieve a victory over them once more.

“A lot has changed for both sides since we last met,” said Perks. “We’ve both recruited heavily over the summer and Cardiff have acquired a new manager in Gemma Donnelly, who has experience managing in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers.

“We’ve not yet seen how Cardiff shape up under her leadership, so this weekend will be more of a case of us focusing on ourselves and continuing to work on our strengths going forward. If we can continue to do this as well as tighten up in defence, I’m confident we can come away with a result this Sunday.”

The game will be held at the Amdani Arena, kick-off is at 2pm. Tickets cost £5 for adults while under-16s go free. If you cannot make it to the game, updates are available on social media @ArgyleWFC.
