The Opposition
After a 17th place finish in Sky Bet League One last year, Burton Albion will have benefited from another summer of continuity under Gary Bowyer. The Brewers will be hoping to push further up the table in 2026/27 after some smart recruitment in the off season.
Curtis Tilt and Joe Lewis were brought in as proven League One defenders. Whereas Matt Dennis and Caylan Vickers will surely add goals, loan additions Raphael Borges Rodrigues and Mark O’Mahony will add to Burton’s existing attacking threat.
Their campaign begun with just one defeat in their first five league games. They drew on the opening day to Stevenage before beating Leicester City at King Power Stadium. Next came defeat, away at Notts County, before a high-scoring win against AFC Wimbledon and a score-draw against Cambridge United.
In the past two, no wins. They lost convincingly away at Oxford United before drawing at Pirelli Stadium against Mansfield Town last weekend. Burton will now be hoping to build on what they have done to this point, but tough tests in their next few against Argyle, Huddersfield Town and Bradford City await.
The Gaffer
54-year-old head coach Gary Bowyer had a short playing career before an enforced retirement at 25 due to injury. The former full-back had spells at Hereford United, Nottingham Forest and Rotherham United before hanging up his boots in 1997. Upon retiring, Bowyer became a part-time coach at Ilkeston before receiving a permanent role as Derby County's under-17s coach.
After six years, Bowyer made the switch to Blackburn Rovers, where he took charge of the under-18s. Further spells with Rovers came as reserve-team manager and caretaker manager before being put in charge of the first team in 2013. After two seasons, he was sacked and took a year out before pitching up at Blackpool.
In his three years at Bloomfield Road, Bowyer achieved promotion with the Seasiders. Next came a stint at Bradford City which lasted just under a year. Upon being sacked, the former defender went back to Derby to work in their academy before taking the Salford City job. That lasted two years and ended in a near promotion to Sky Bet League One.
Bowyer headed to Scotland for his next job, winning the Scottish Championship with Dundee before departing at the end of the season. Another stint out of the game followed; Bowyer then joined Burton Albion midway through the 2024/25 campaign, where he currently remains.
The Squad
Dynamic midfielder Charlie Webster came through the ranks at Chelsea and was considered one of the Blues’ most promising youngsters. He starred for the under-21s as a 17-year-old and impressed in the EFL Trophy. He was sent on loan to Eredivisie side Heerenveen where he featured 13 times in the Dutch top flight. Webster signed for Burton Albion in 2024 and has since remained at Pirelli Stadium, becoming a key player for the Brewers.
Jack Armer joined hometown club Preston North End as a youngster but was unable to break into the first-team setup, instead being released. Carlisle United took a chance on the full-back, and he repaid their faith, going on to feature 172 times across four seasons for the Cumbrians. After Carlisle were relegated from League One in 2024, Armer opted for pastures new, joining Burton Albion. The 25-year-old Scotsman has continued to impress in the third tier for the Brewers, recently surpassing 90 appearances for Burton.
35-year-old centre-back Curtis Tilt forged his career in non-league before being handed an opportunity in the Football League by Blackpool. He spent three years in Lancashire before signing for Rotherham United. Whilst with the Millers, Tilt had three loans at Wigan Athletic, whom he would eventually sign for permanently. Two years followed in Sky Bet League Two with Salford City before a move to Bradford City last summer. In his only season with the Bantams, Tilt featured 35 times. The former Jamaica international was sold to Burton Albion ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Previous Meeting
Burton Albion were the first team to visit Home Park in 2026. In our last meeting with the Brewers Brendan Galloway opened the scoring by converting Joe Ralls' corner midway through the first half. Mathias Ross made it two just after the hour mark when he was in the right place at the right time to net from close range. Lorent Tolaj sealed the result, stepping up from the penalty spot to fire past Brad Collins, making it 3-0.
