The Game
Argyle vs Huddersfield Town. Home Park. Saturday, 17 October. 3pm. Sky Bet League One.
The Opposition
Huddersfield Town enjoyed a successful start to the 2026/27 campaign, beating AFC Wimbledon 3-0 on the opening day with two goals coming from summer-signing Derensili Sanches Fernandes. They then drew away at MK Dons before beating Cambridge United at Cledara Abbey Stadium.
This led to manager Martin Drury winning Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month for August. They lost only once in September (against Bromley), also picking up an impressive win against Oxford United and draws against Notts County and Mansfield Town in that period. Drury’s side’s strong form continued into October, the Terriers beat Burton Albion away before drawing at home to Sheffield Wednesday, one of the pre-season favourites.
There are only two places between Argyle and Huddersfield in the Sky Bet League One table; this game already looks to be a blockbuster clash, with both teams hoping to lay an early blow to one of their promotion rivals.
The Gaffer
Huddersfield Town manager Martin Drury featured for Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday, Gainsborough Trinity and Bradford Park Avenue on the pitch. It would be with the latter that the former defender retired, going on to take on an assistant-manager and manager role at the non-league side.
In 2016, Bradford City picked Drury up to work in their academy, a year later he became a full-time youth coach at Valley Parade. This would lead to him landing the Lead Development Coach role for the Bantams’ academy before he was asked to assist with the first-team under Michael Collins and David Hopkin.
He had a stint as caretaker manager during the 2018/19 campaign after Hopkin resigned. This led to future roles as Senior Technical and Tactical Coach as well as Head of Academy Coaching. In 2022, Drury joined Premier-League giants Manchester United to become an academy coach, before a move to West Bromwich Albion two years later to take on a first-team coaching role.
He would then spend a short period in Spain with Valencia as an assistant coach before returning to England to become assistant first-team coach at Brentford. He took on an assistant manager role at Huddersfield Town which led to him being made manager in the summer, following the departure of Liam Manning.
Ones to Watch
Former Argyle promotion-winner Bali Mumba began his career at Sunderland, signing a senior deal before being sent on loan to South Shields. Norwich City bought the wing-back and sent him on temporary spells to Peterborough United and Argyle. The Greens paid a then club-record fee to sign Mumba permanently; he went on to make over 120 appearances as a Pilgrim. Back in January, Huddersfield Town signed the 24-year-old from Argyle, he has since featured regularly for the Terriers. He netted his first goal for the Yorkshire outfit earlier this season against Burton Albion.
Huddersfield Town’s talisman Joe Taylor was released by Norwich as a youngster and forced to rebuild his career in non-league with Kings Lynn Town. Stints followed at Peterborough United, Luton Town, Colchester United and Lincoln City. Huddersfield recruited the striker in 2025; he spent a year at Accu Stadium before a goalscoring loan at Wigan Athletic midway through last season. Having returned to the Terriers in the summer, Taylor has been in fine form – scoring six goals in ten games so far this season.
Versatile attacker Derensili Sanches Fernandes began his career in the Netherlands, featuring for Excelsior’s development side’s. It would be with Utrecht that Sanches Fernandes made his professional debut in the Eredivisie; he spent just six months there before rejoining Excelsior. Three further years ensued in which the goalscorer netted 20 times before a move to Huddersfield Town in the summer. Since arriving at Accu Stadium, the 25-year-old has scored four and assisted four in nine league games.
Team News
Bim Pepple is back from injury and will be available for selection on Saturday against Huddersfield Town. Head Coach Tom Cleverley stated in his press-match press conference that: "60 minutes is an option."
Both Jack MacKenzie and Alex Hartridge came through Monday night's Premier League Cup game unscathed and will be options for Cleverley to choose from on Saturday.
Julio Pleguezuelo is another that could make their return to competitive action this weekend, he has been deemed fit after training throughout the week.
Joe Edwards precautionary withdrawal against AFC Wimbledon has boded well for the Greens; he will be ready to return ahead of Tuesday's trip to Stevenage.
Malachi Boateng and Michael Baidoo are "progressing really well" with Tom Cleverley revealing: "the FA Cup weekend looks like it could be realistic [for a return]."
Owen Oseni and Joe Mwaro shouldn't be too far behind that pair, with returns pencilled in at some point throughout the festive period.
Previous Meeting
It was only back in March that we last took on Huddersfield Town in a Sky Bet League One clash at Home Park. Cameron Humphreys’ spectacular solo run and finish put the visitors ahead midway through the first period. The second-half response from the Greens was impressive; Owen Dale hammered home to level the game before Bim Pepple made it 2-1 from the penalty spot. With just over 15 minutes left to play, Owen Oseni sealed the result, converting the rebound after Jak Alnwick saved from Pepple.
