The Game
Leyton Orient vs Argyle. BetWright Stadium. Saturday, 3 October. 3pm. Sky Bet League One.

The Opposition
After finishing the 2024/25 campaign in the play-offs, Leyton Orient failed to match that success last season despite retaining the services of Head Coach Richie Wellens. The O's did, however, lose key loan players Josh Keeley, Charlie Kelman and Jamie Donley.

Last season was an underwhelming campaign; Orient faced a relegation battle and survived on the final day after they managed a point against Burton Albion and Exeter City lost. Richie Wellens remains in his post at BetWright Stadium with hopes that he can return Orient's fight further up the Sky Bet League One table.

They have experienced a mixed start to the current campaign and come into this weekend's game in 11th place, with three wins, three defeats and one draw. Their opening-day defeat against early pace setters Sheffield Wednesday was rectified by a win on the road against Wigan Athletic the following week. Defeat then came against Barnsley before they trashed divisional newcomers Bromley 5-0.

Things seemed to be on the right course with an away point against Luton Town but defeat at Wycombe Wanderers had Orient fans scratching their heads. Just under two weeks ago, Wellens' side beat Stevenage at BetWright Stadium before enjoying a weekend off due to the international break. Therefore, they come into tomorrow's fixture against Argyle well rested - a tough test for the Greens.

The Gaffer
46-year-old head coach Richie Wellens came through Manchester United's academy as a youngster, before enjoying a successful playing career in the EFL where he featured most notably for Blackpool, Leicester City and Doncaster Rovers. The former midfielder retired upon the conclusion of the 2016/17 campaign and immediately began coaching, rejoining former club Oldham Athletic.

He initially joined the Latics as first-team coach but was made caretaker manager less than three months later after John Sheridan was sacked. He was soon given the job on a permanent basis but was sacked less than a year later when Oldham were relegated into Sky Bet League Two. Swindon Town then took a chance on Wellens, a club which he would go on to have great success at.

In his only full season at The Nigel Eady County Ground, the Mancunian led Swindon to the League Two title in a campaign prematurely curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Midway through the following season, Wellens opted to join Salford City in the division below, but left by mutual consent less than four months later.

Next came a short stint at another of his former clubs, Doncaster Rovers, which again lasted less than a year. He was sacked with Rovers 23rd in League One, he would go on to join Leyton Orient a couple of months later. In his first full season in charge at BetWright Stadium, Wellens led the O's to promotion as champions of the fourth tier. He has enjoyed mixed success so far in his two years in League One with the East London side and will be hoping to return them to the top half of the table in 2026/27.

One to Watch
One of the most sought after strikers in the EFL this summer was Jaze Kabia - Leyton Orient won that race. The forward was born in Ireland and made his senior debut at Cobh Ramblers. He would go on to feature for Shelbourne before a move to Scottish side Livingston. Loans followed at Falkirk, Greenock Morton and Queen of the South before a permanent stints at Cork City and Clyde. Kabia made the move to Cornwall in 2024 to join Truro City, where he spent just one season scoring 16 goals. Grimsby Town recruited the 26-year-old in 2025, he again moved on after just one successful season in which he scored 24 goals for the Mariners. Orient won the race for the Irishman's signature  this summer; he has since netted five times for the O's.

Previous Meeting
Argyle won twice at Leyton Orient last season, once in Sky Bet League One and once in the EFL Trophy. The most recent of those two victories was in the league, back in February. Bim Pepple opened the scoring but saw his goal was cancelled out just two minutes later after Ollie O'Neill levelled. Ronan Curtis put Argyle ahead again, striking early in the second half before Mathias Ross sealed the result with a header that made it 3-1.
