The Game
Argyle v Peterborough United. Saturday, 20 September. 3pm. Sky Bet League One.
The Opposition
Peterborough are bottom of the table at this early stage, with just four points from eight games, but that only tells part of their story.
The facts are that the Posh lost their first four games but, like Argyle, had a strong level of opposition to kick things off, as they lost to Cardiff City, Luton Town, Wigan Athletic and Barnsley.
A draw at home to Bradford City was followed by a loss at Exeter City, and a narrow defeat at Huddersfield Town. Most recently, Posh got their first win by beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 last Saturday.
There has been a large turnover of players in the Peterborough squad. They have signed eight players since the season started, including four on transfer deadline day. Only two players that started on the opening day of the season at Cardiff began the Wycombe win.
The Gaffer
53-year-old Darren Ferguson was a midfielder throughout his playing days, featuring on the pitch for Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sparta Rotterdam, Wrexham, and Peterborough United. In 2007 Ferguson took his first step into coaching, fulfilling a player-manager role with the Posh.
In his first two full seasons in the post, he led Peterborough to back-to-back promotions from League Two into the Championship. Midway through the 2009/10 campaign, the Scot departed London Road by mutual consent. It did not take long for Preston North End to snap up Ferguson; he would go on to spend 12 months at Deepdale.
Ferguson returned to Peterborough in January 2011 and would go on to spend four further years with the Posh in his second stint. Next came nearly three years at Doncaster Rovers, in which he achieved another League Two promotion.
Following his resignation from Rovers in 2018, Ferguson made another return to Peterborough United. Another promotion to the Championship was achieved in this three-year stint before he resigned, with relegation back to the third tier looming.
Less than a year later, Ferguson was back at London Road for a fourth stint. Since then, Ferguson has remained and won the Vertu Trophy for a third time as Posh boss.
The Squad
Only two players have started all eight league games for Peterborough this season so far: Archie Collins (below) and Brandon Khela.
Collins was born in Taunton, and came through the ranks at Exeter City, for whom he made his debut just after his 18th birthday. Over five seasons in the first team, he played 221 games for the Grecians before moving to Peterborough in June 2023. He has been a fixture in their midfield ever since.
Khela has, for the most part, played in a midfield three with Collins, albeit slightly further forward. Khela, 20, signed in the summer, from Birmingham City. With the Blues, he only played eight times, also having loans out to Ross County and Bradford City. He is setting out to make a name for himself at the Posh.
Jimmy-Jay Morgan signed on deadline day and has scored two in two since his arrival. The 19-year-old from Chelsea was with Gillingham last season, scoring two in 16, but he has already matched that tally with a fine start to life in Peterborough.
