The Game
Wycombe Wanderers v Argyle. Adams Park. Tuesday, 9 December. 7.45pm. Sky Bet League One.
The Opposition
Wycombe are 12th in League One, with six wins, six draws and six defeats from 18 games.
When Argyle met Wycombe on 1 November, in the Emirates FA Cup, the Chairboys were 17th. They have played four league games since then, winning two and drawing two.
When they drew with Rotherham United on 29 November, that extended Wycombe’s unbeaten stretch in all competitions to 12. However, they have lost their last two, getting knocked out of the Vertu Trophy with a 2-0 loss at Northampton Town, and then exiting the FA Cup following a 4-0 defeat at Exeter City.
The Gaffer
Michael Duff was a defender who played for just two league teams – Cheltenham Town and Burnley – playing more than 300 games for each. He also played 24 times for Northern Ireland.
Duff’s first managerial job was at Cheltenham, having spent time coaching in Burnley’s academy. After four years at the helm, he had taken Cheltenham into League One, and achieved their highest-ever finish.
This led to a role at Barnsley, where in his one season he got to a League One play-off final, but lost to Sheffield Wednesday.
In the summer of 2023, he joined Swansea City, in the Championship, but he was sacked before the year’s end. His next job was with Huddersfield Town, in League One, but was dismissed by the Terriers after nine months, with Huddersfield in mid-table.
The Squad
Sam Bell (below), on loan from Bristol City, is now Wycombe’s leading goalscorer, with six league goals. The 23-year-old has spent his career so far with Bristol City, his hometown side. After initial loans with Clevedon Town, Yate Town and Grimsby Town, he got into the City side and played over 100 times, but has headed east to Buckinghamshire for this season.
Left-back Dan Harvie, who is capable of playing in central defence or on the left of midfield, has featured in all but one of Wycombe’s league games, starting 16. Having represented Aberdeen, Dumbarton and Ayr United in Scotland, Harvie moved to Milton Keynes Dons, and played over 150 times for them, before switching to the double-blue part of Bucks.
Centre-back Connor Taylor turned pro at hometown side Stoke City, spending the 2021/22 season on loan at Bristol Rovers. That season, he was one of the final three nominated for League Two Player of the Season, losing out to Finn Azaz, who had spent the season with Newport County. He returned to Stoke, playing sporadically in 2022/23, but then signed for Rovers permanently the following year. Player of the Year last year for Rovers, as they were relegated, he moved to Wycombe in the summer.
Previous Meetings
The last season Argyle played Wycombe in the league was in 2022/23. The Pilgrims won both games 1-0, with Sam Cosgrove’s penalty the difference at Adams Park, and Dan Scarr getting the winning goal at Home Park later in the season.
Earlier this season, just over five weeks ago, Wycombe beat Argyle 2-0 in the FA Cup, with Cauley Woodrow scoring both goals.
