The Game
Wycombe v Argyle. Adams Park. Saturday, 22 August. 3pm. Sky Bet League One.
The Opposition
Wycombe Wanderers are gearing up for a sixth consecutive campaign in League One, following their relegation from the Championship in 2021.
The Chairboys changed manager early last season, bringing in Michael Duff who was able to lead them to an 11th-place finish in the third tier.
They will surely be hoping to breach the top ten and push for the play-offs in 2026/27, with Duff being given a full summer transfer window to really shape his squad.
He has managed to recruit experienced operators Steve Cook and Cauley Woodrow to bring some knowhow to his side, In addition to that, Emre Tezgel, Sam Parker and Silko Thomas have all been brought in and will be hoping to prove themselves in League One.
To begin the campaign, Wanderers drew 1-1 with Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, conceding late after Fred Onyedinma gave the Chairboys an early lead. They, along with Argyle, will be hoping to notch their first win of the season on Saturday.
The Gaffer
48-year-old Michael Duff was a two-club man throughout his 20-year playing career, making over 300 appearances for both Cheltenham Town and Burnley. The former centre back also represented his nation, featuring 24 times for Northern Ireland.
Upon retiring, Duff coached Burnley's academy sides, first the Under-18s before the Under-23s. He was also, on occasion, asked to assist first-team operations at Turf Moor. In 2018, he took his first management job in the Football League, taking charge at his other ex-club, Cheltenham Town.
During his four years in Gloucestershire, Duff got the Robins promoted into League One and guided them to their best-ever league finish, 15th in the third tier. Perhaps sensing he could take Cheltenham no further, he opted to become Head Coach at Barnsley.
In his only season at Oakwell, Duff led the Tykes to the League One Play-off Final, in which they lost to Sheffield Wednesday in extra-time. Following that heartbreak, he was poached by Championship outfit Swansea City, meaning that despite losing at Wembley he was to make the step up to the second tier.
His time in Wales was short and unsuccessful, as was his subsequent spell at Huddersfield Town. This led to Duff being appointed Wycombe's Head Coach in September 2025. During his nearly year in charge at Adams Park, Wycombe have consolidated and look a strong mid-table outfit in League One. The hope now will be to push towards the top six, in a quest to return both the Chairboys and himself to the Championship.
The Squad
Former Argyle 'Keeper Conor Hazard swapped Home Park for Adams Park this summer, after rejecting a new deal. The 28-year-old came through the ranks at Celtic, where he was loaned out to Falkirk, Partick Thistle, Dundee FC, and HJK. Ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, Hazard was allowed to leave Celtic permanently and join Argyle, who were then in the Championship. The Northern Ireland international spent three years in Devon, making just shy of 100 appearances as a Pilgrim.
Veteran defender Steve Cook is somewhat of a statement signing for Wycombe. The 35-year-old began his career at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he spent four years as a senior player before a move to Bournemouth in 2012. It would be with the Cherries that Cook would make a name for himself, featuring 356 times, largely in the Premier League. He would eventually join Nottingham Forest in 2022, where he helped them to promotion into the top flight. Three years with Queens Park Rangers followed that, before a move to Wycombe this summer.
Fred Onyedinma scored Wanderers first goal of the 2026/27 campaign, firing in against Blackpool within ten minutes of the game's beginning. He was at Millwall as a junior, making over 150 appearances for the Lions whilst having two separate loans at Wycombe. He eventually signed for the Chairboys permanently and helped them achieve promotion to the Championship in 2020. He choose to depart Adams Park a year later and join Luton Town, who subsequently loaned him to Rotherham United. Onyedinma would return to Wycombe for a second permanent stint in 2024; he has since played 96 times, scoring 17 goals.
