Argyle Women lost on the opening day of the FANWL Southern Premier Division, with Billericay Town proving too strong for the Pilgrims at Coach Road.

The Greens came close to taking an early lead through Charlotte Whitmore, whose driven shot goalwards was saved by Billericay keeper Alex Baker. However, the Blues chalked up their first goal of the match moments later through Maddie Biggs at close range.

Argyle goalkeeper Jasmine Read was called into action on numerous occasions, including a brilliant double save in the 14th minute from point blank, but she could do nothing about Biggs increasing the visitors’ lead in the 38th minute via a well-worked counter-attack.

Billericay added a third before half-time, when miscommunication from Read and the Argyle defence resulted in Biggs pouncing onto the loose ball and slotting it into the net to claim her hat-trick before the whistle blew for half-time.

Despite Argyle resilience, Billericay found their fourth goal of the match halfway through the second half. A shot from range forced an excellent save from Read who tipped the shot onto the bar. The resulting ricochets landed the ball at the foot of Biggs, who fired home.

The visitors’ fifth came via Ruby Sealey striking from on the edge of the area and, although Rebecca Dandridge and Taya Pomfret led some Argyle attacks as they tried to get a goal back, Che Thomas got in behind the Greens to add a final, late goal.

Argyle will look to bounce back from this result this weekend as they travel away from home to Exwick Sports Hub, where they take on Exeter City in the determining round of the FAWNL League Cup. The winner of the match will move further on into the Cup whilst the defeated side will continue in the plate.
