Report | Argyle Women 2-1 Cardiff City

Argyle Women picked up their second win of pre-season on Sunday afternoon, beating Cardiff City 2-1 at Manadon Sports Hub.

First-half goals from Charlotte Whitmore and Roisin Kivel propelled the Greens to victory, despite the visiting side scoring a goal of their own in the final moments of the tie.

The opening stages of the game were dominated by both sides battling to retain possession of the ball for long spells. High pressing and intensity made this a tricky task, but it was Argyle who struck first just before the half-hour mark.

Whitmore – playing on the right flank – used her pace extremely well to beat the visitors' high defensive line, take the ball round the onrushing goalkeeper and slot the ball into an open goal.

Ten minutes later, one became two. New signing Kivel picked up the ball on the left and chipped the ball from outside the area, into the far corner, doubling the Greens’ lead.

The second half consisted mainly of rolling substitutions for Argyle, giving valuable minutes to those that needed them, until the 87th minute when Cardiff scored their only goal of the game.

A free-kick was awarded to the visitors, following a trialist handballing the ball just outside the area, and it found the back of the net, after the effort was curled into the far top corner of Argyle’s goal.

The full-time whistle was blown and the Greens picked up their second win of pre-season, with all attention now turning to next Sunday when Wolverhampton Wanderers travel to Home Park.
