Everyone at Argyle was saddened to hear of the recent death of longtime supporter John Penney, at the age of 78.
John was the chairperson of the Vice Presidents’ club at Argyle, and had been involved in supporters’ organisations for decades.
John began supporting Argyle when he was 14, attending with his uncle Charlie, and got involved with the VPs as early as 1969, when it was founded by Robert Daniel. He was the chairperson for last 15 years or so.
In his working career, John worked as an ambulance driver and paramedic; as a bus driver; and in sales for various companies, including WEA Records. A highlight of the latter job was meeting his musical hero, Rod Stewart.
Our condolences to John’s family, including wife Heather, sons Colin and Richard, and daughter Sarah.
Richard told us: “Dad’s passion and drive for Argyle was at the forefront of all he did.
“In agreement with Argyle and the family, all of Dad’s memorabilia obtained throughout his years as not only a fan, but also chairman of the Vice Presidents’ Club, will be donated back to Argyle Archive. It means Dad will remain with the club for all fans to see, share his passion for the club and some great memories.
“Dad was also very involved in the community in Saltash. His favourite charity was the RNLI, and if anyone wishes to donate to them in his name, that would be very fitting.”
Once again, our best wishes to John’s family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
