RIP Peter McParland
We are sad to hear that former Argyle player Peter McParland, Forever Green legacy number 470, has died at the age of 91.
Peter played for Argyle between 1963-64, playing 40 times and scoring 14 goals in almost exactly a year at Home Park. This included a hat-trick in a 3-1 home win over Leeds United.
Born in Newry, Northern Ireland, Peter began his career at Dundalk, but moved to Aston Villa in 1952, and began a decade with Villa that saw him play 341 times and score 121 goals. He scored twice as Villa won the 1957 FA Cup Final, and also scored the winner in the final as the Villans lifted the first ever League Cup title.
Peter, who earned 34 caps for Northern Ireland during his playing career, moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers before Ellis Stuttard brought the winger to Argyle. After playing for several non-league clubs, McParland briefly managed Glentoran and the Hong Kong national team.
Our best wishes go out to Peter’s friends and family.
