SuperCupNI Report | St Patrick's Athletic 2-0 Argyle

Argyle Academy

Argyle suffered a 2-0 defeat to Irish side St Patrick’s Athletic on Wednesday afternoon, in their final match of Group D at the SuperCupNI.

Despite starting the game positively and having an early chance through Finley Towey, which was saved by the St Pat’s goalkeeper after a quick breakaway, two first-half goals for the Greens’ opponents were enough to propel them to victory.

The first came in the 14th minute, following some quick counter-attacking play. St Pat’s found shooting room inside the area and initially saw their shot saved by Tom Armytage in the Argyle goal, but the follow-up deflected in, giving them the advantage.

They almost found a second soon after, but an Ethan Udo block on the line kept the Greens in the game for a small period.

St Patrick’s’ advantage then grew to two just minutes before half-time, when attacking play down the right flank saw a cross get deflected into the goal by what seemed to be a player in green.

Head Coach Niall Cully turned to his bench and made substitutions to try and get Argyle back into the game but, in the end, St Pat’s held onto their lead until the full-time whistle.

All teams in the competition are now split into different competitions based off of their group finish. Therefore, Argyle will now face Charlton Athletic in the Bowl semi-final on Thursday. The game is at The Warren, Portstewart, and will kick off at 3pm.
