Under-18s head to Luton for Youth Alliance Cup

Jamie Lowry

Argyle Under-18s play their opening game of the EFL Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday afternoon, travelling to Luton Town.

The Greens will want to succeed for multiple reasons. Progression in the competition being the main factor, but redemption from the opening game of the season being another.

Argyle suffered a 5-1 defeat to the Hatters in August, with Fletcher Poole scoring the only goal on the sunny afternoon.

Head Coach Jamie Lowry is aware of the threat Luton possess but believes a positive and cutting-edge performance can propel his side to victory on the weekend.

“We’re hoping for a good one [on Saturday],” Lowry told Argyle TV. “Last year, it was a group stage into knockout rounds, so now with it going straight into a knockout game, it’s important that we come away with a victory, and how we go about that is key. We spoke about being difficult to play against all week.

“I thought last week we had a decent enough performance, but missed out on having a cutting edge in the final third. We're going to need to show that this week. We need form on the day and must find a way to have that winning mentality.

“We’re all looking forward to it. We played them before in our first game of the season, so it's important that we go up there in the right frame of mind. We don't let what's gone before affect us too much. It's important that we're ready, and we will be prepared, but also that we’re psychologically ready, and what's happened in the past is out of our minds.

“They’re obviously a really strong side in our Category Three status. They’re physical, very forward-thinking, and have some strong and excellent players. It can be a really good game, but we have to be focused, switched on, making sure our concentration is there, and defending and doing our jobs properly.”
