Under-18s Report | Argyle 1-1 Northampton Town

Argyle Under-18s

Argyle Under-18s extended their unbeaten run to three games on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Northampton Town at Millennium Fields.

Sam Lord’s strike late in the first half brought Argyle level, after Oliver Evans gave the visitors the lead, but despite multiple chances in front of goal in the second half, the game saw no more goals.

Within eight minutes of the start, Evans put the Cobblers ahead with a left-footed volley from inside the six-yard box, and it seemed as though their lead would be doubled after some intense pressure in the Greens’ final third.

Play on the right flank ended with Francesco Obiagwu picking the ball up in the Argyle penalty box, unmarked, but the forward fired his effort over the bar from close range.

Northampton continued to apply pressure on Argyle, but Jamie Lowry’s side held strong and stopped any forward progress, whilst also creating a few chances of their own. Frankie Maund came closest but dragged his effort wide of goal and out of play.

Just before the half-time whistle, however, Argyle drew level through Lord. After multiple saved or blocked attempts, the Argyle midfielder thundered his effort through several bodies, off the crossbar, and into the goal.

All of the action in the second half came in the final 10 minutes, with both sides creating chances around the final third of the pitch. Jack Flower made an excellent save low to his left to stop a fizzed Northampton strike, with Fletcher Poole then just missing a free-kick attempt, curling his effort round the wrong side of the post.

A late corner for the visitors seemed as though it might cause issues, but Argyle defended it well and secured a point at home.

Despite the point, Head Coach Jamie Lowry said: “Overall, a disappointing performance from us. We weren’t brave enough on the ball, didn’t pass it well enough, and lacked any quality around the final third.

“It’s annoying not take the opportunity and go three from three, really, but we still picked up a point and will continue on to Gillingham next week.”
