Argyle continued their run of fine form on Saturday morning, picking up three points in a 3-1 victory over Newport County at Millennium Fields.
Fletcher Poole’s six-minute brace and a close-range goal from Tashall Sandhu were enough for Jamie Lowry’s side to come away with their third win in a row, with the visitors adding a consolation goal late in the tie.
The Greens started on top and, within five minutes, took the lead through Poole, slotting home past Cassius Tanhai in the Newport goal.
Soon enough, one became two for both Argyle and Poole. Seb Campbell was dragged down in the area, a penalty was awarded, and Poole confidently stepped up and converted from the spot.
Argyle continued to hunt for another goal and, just after the 20th minute, Poole thought he had his hat-trick, after beating Tanhai at the near post, but his strike was ruled out for an earlier offside.
For the remainder of the half, it was all Argyle. Ball movement was quick and confidence was on show, but Newport did well to stop the Greens from finding the back of the net for a third time, with the game being 2-0 as the half-time whistle blew.
The opening stages of the second half were very much like the final stages of the first, with little action on the pitch.
Newport did build into the game more, causing some problems for Jack Flower and the defensive line in front of him, but the Argyle number one made several saves, including a low one to his right, to stop any potential attacking threats.
Lowry turned to his bench, bringing on Kian Burch and Jovan Wamani initially, and Joel Tolcher just before the 80th minute. Then, finally, Argyle had their third goal.
Wamani, who replaced Malachi Davy at left-back, cut onto his right foot and delivered a cross into the box, which made its way through the area, struck the far post, and fell at the feet of Sandhu, who tapped home under pressure.
Newport scored their only goal of the game in the 88th minute, through an Armani Baibah left-footed strike, but it was not enough to force any comeback whatsoever, with Argyle claiming the three points as the full-time whistle blew.
