Under-18s Report | Newquay AFC 0-1 Argyle

Under-18s

Seb Campbell’s first-half finish pushed Argyle to a one-goal victory over Newquay AFC on Tuesday night.

Argyle dominated the majority of possession throughout the opening stages of the tie, but struggled to test the Newquay backline in front of goal fully.

In the 24th minute, Campbell gave the Greens the lead. Fletcher Poole was fouled on the edge of the opposition’s area, and some quick thinking led to Campbell running through on goal, latching onto the end of the fast pass, and slotting home, handing Argyle the lead.

Poole then had a chance of his own, after beating his defender for pace down the left wing, but saw his left-footed effort at goal saved on the second attempt, after a small spill from the goalkeeper.

Just before half-time, Newquay had a good chance to equalise with a tap-in at the back post, but the arriving player in red and white couldn’t turn his effort on target.

Argyle and Newquay both had chances in the second 45 minutes, with the hosts coming closest as they hit the post, but it was the Greens who held out and won the tie 1-0.

Head Coach Jamie Lowry said: " Last night was really pleasing and it was good to get a full 90 minutes of game time for most of the lads. We had lots of opportunities to practice our patterns and what we’ve been working on in training and had lots of the ball, but also had to deal with a little spell of the game with our backs against the wall for the last 10-15 minutes.

"The boys had to pull together, so I’m really pleased with where we're at, at this stage, and how the game went."
