Weeks and Edwards sign for Argyle Women
Argyle Women have completed the signings of Freya Weeks and Lois Edwards.
Edwards, a defender, joins the Greens after last playing for Scottish Women’s Premier League side Aberdeen, featuring 21 times in all competitions.
The 23-year-old started her career with Brighton’s academy, spending five years on the south coast, winning the Manager’s Player of the Year award in every season. A move to Cobham followed, playing for Chelsea Academy alongside a familiar face to the Green Army, Caitlin Smith.
A trip across the Atlantic handed Edwards the opportunity to experience a different style of football, playing one season in the NCAA for Loyola University, Maryland, before returning to the UK and moving to Scotland.
The defender has trained with Argyle for several weeks and now is delighted to make the deal official with the Pilgrims.
“I’m very excited and it's nice to finally get it done,” Edwards told Argyle TV. “It’s been really good so far. I've been in for a few weeks and have been able to get to know the girls. I've been to a few of the games, and they've done well recently, which is a nice thing.
“I know the league quite well. It’s a good quality league, and growing. I know Caitlin and a core group of the girls, as well, which is good. I was just looking to return to England and thought it was a good opportunity.”
Weeks has been a key feature in Argyle's youth sides in recent years, coming from a goalkeeper-heavy family with links to the Greens, and has penned a dual-signing agreement with Women’s Championship side Bristol City.
The 16-year-old has learnt her trade alongside current first-team keeper Lily Felgate and adds some much-needed depth between the sticks for the Pilgrims for the remainder of the season, and into the future.
Freya has represented England through multiple age groups, most recently for the Under-16s against Switzerland, at St. George’s Park.
Freya said: “I’m really excited. I’ve been here for a long time, since I was eight years old, so I’m excited to take the next step and move up to the first team.
“It’s been good being able to play and learn with the Under-16s, and have a successful season so far; being unbeaten in the league. I can’t wait to get started.”
Argyle Women’s Head Coach James Bradley said: “It’s great to welcome Lois to Argyle. She brings the experience of having played in a top academy and more recently in Scotland, so we are pleased to welcome her to Home Park.
“She adds lots of quality and a little more depth to our defensive unit. We are all delighted to get the deal over the line.
“Freya has been a key part of the Argyle youth system so it’s excellent to see her progression through the pathway and welcome her to our first team.
“She has been training with the first team regularly and, despite her age, looks more than comfortable in the environment. We look forward to continuing to support Freya’s development.”
Lois will wear the number 22 shirt, whilst Freya will wear the number 23 shirt. Both players will be available for selection for this weekend’s game against Billericay Town, subject to league approval.
