Wes Harding speaks on his permanent return to Home Park

Wes Harding getting interviewed by Argyle TV

Wes Harding became Argyle’s second signing of the summer on Monday, when he signed a two-year deal, following the expiry of his contract at Millwall, on 1 July.

The defender, who was on loan at Home Park during the second half of the 2026/27 season, spoke of his joy in returning to PL2, this time on a permanent basis.

“It’s nice to be wanted,” Harding told Argyle TV. “I think every player wants that; you want people calling your agent’s phone, or your phone.

“It has been nice that I’ve been wanted, but it’s mutual thing: I want to be here too.

“I’ve had a lot of conversations over the past couple of weeks, so I’m just happy that I’m finally here.”

It was, perhaps, no fluke that the arrival of Harding on loan in January coincided with the Pilgrims’ upturn in form throughout the second half of the 2025/26 campaign.

The defender is looking to build on this next season and potentially go one further.

He said: “How we ended last season has obviously played its part in my thoughts to be here, and probably how I’ve done has been the same for the club.

“It was a really joyful period pushing. I really believed we were going to get into the play-offs. It didn’t happen, but we are hoping we can have some success next year.

“We can go up; that’s the plan, that’s the focus. We want to get promoted. It starts on day one of pre-season.”

Harding returns with new responsibility. He has been named vice-captain, in support of club captain Joe Edwards.

The 29-year-old Harding is looking forward to embracing this new challenge that has been bestowed upon him by Argyle Head Coach Tom Cleverley.

“It’s an honour really,” Wes said. “I like having responsibility; it suits my characteristics as a player and as a person.

“When the gaffer mentioned it, I was honoured to hear it and I’m looking forward to stepping into that role.

“I’ve had good captains, Joe (Edwards) being one of them. [They are] people you can learn off. I like to think of myself as a captain whether I’ve got the armband or not.

“I’ve been in a few changing rooms where there are leaders all around and that’s what you want. I’m looking forward to being part of that team.”
