Inaugural Argyle FIT Champions Crowned
Last Sunday saw the first Argyle FIT Tournament at Cornwall College in Camborne.
A joint initiative between Cornwall Council’s ‘Healthy Cornwall’ Scheme and Argyle Community Trust, Argyle FIT (Fans In Training) helps men to get fit and lose weight through weekly seven-a-side football games at five centres across the county. You can read more about it here.
The Tournament, which is the culmination of the first FIT programme that started last September, attracted more than 60 players in nine teams, with at least one team from each of the five Cornish venues at Camborne, Launceston, St Stephen, Bodmin and Penzance.
The teams were split into two groups, with the top two from each going into the semi-finals. The rest of the teams played in a second group stage, meaning that all played at least eight 10-minute matches, so everyone got plenty of football on what turned out to be a glorious day in west Cornwall.
The trophy final turned into an epic clash between the superbly named Largentina of Launceston and KFC Wimbledon of Bodmin. With the teams tied at full time and after extra time, a penalty shootout was the only way to separate the two. The Largentina goalkeeper saved the first penalty, and that proved decisive as all subsequent spot-kicks found the back of the net.
Gary Stevens, Holiday and Programmes Lead in West Cornwall for Argyle Community Trust, had the task of planning the complicated match schedule, but came out smiling.
He said: “Everyone enjoyed the day, and it was also great to see some of the players’ families who came along to support their guys and enjoy the sunshine. We’re already looking forward and planning the next Tournament.”
So big congratulations to Largentina of Launceston - the inaugural Argyle FIT Tournament champions.
